The Georgia Dugout Club expresses its deepest sympathy to the families of retired baseball coaches John Owens and Jim Simmons who passed this week.

Owens, primarily known for his work coaching baseball at Fitzgerald High School, passed away Wednesday, March 10. He also coached baseball and basketball in Wilcox and Dodge Counties and also scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Longtime Statesboro High School and Effingham County baseball coach Jim Simmons passed away Thursday, March 11 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Simmons coached at Effingham County from 1994-2005 and had 193 wins at the school.

He took over at Statesboro in 2008 and coached there until retiring after the shortened 2020 season.
